Supporting Europe's Climate Modeling Community

ESiWACE3 supports the European modelling community by offering, via open calls, tailored advice, engineering time and/or help with implementing code modifications – free of charge – to weather and climate modelling groups. This is implemented via two categories of service projects:

Model Optimization, Acceleration, and HPC Exploitation
This service supports collaborative projects in which ESiWACE experts contribute both advice and engineering effort to applicants. Up to 6 person-months of support are available, distributed over one year.

Support for Domain-Specific Tools and Technologies
This service provides assistance with tools developed by ESiWACE partners. Up to 2 person-months of support are offered over a six-month period. Leading Experts in HPC And Climate Modeling

NLESC - Research Software & Computational Methods
- Centre of excellence for the development and application of research software;
- Experts in state-of-the-art computational methods and technologies;
- Unique expertise in programming for heterogeneous hardware architectures;
- Unique expertise in optimisation and auto-tuning of code for accelerators;
- Optimising software for supercomputing platforms;
- Dealing with extensive Fortran codes from atmospheric physics and oceanography.
ATOS/EVIDEN - HPC Solutions & Infrastructure
- Experienced HPC experts in the weather and climate domain;
- HPC applications performance profiling, tuning and scaling;
- Heterogeneous systems, especially GPU computing and HBM;
- Access to a wide set of state-of-the-art HPC hardware, software, tools and knowledge;
- Strong collaboration with technology providers (hardware, software, tools and library);
- Reproducible benchmarking framework.
BSC - Supercomputing & Climate Modelling
- Leading supercomputer facility and software consultancy agency;
- Developing and implementing global and regional models;
- Data solutions for air quality, climate predictions and their applications;
- Profiling and optimising multi-component MPI applications;
- Dealing with I/O bottlenecks and accelerating algorithms using GPUs.
DKRZ - Climate-Focused HPC & Data Management
- High-performance computing and data management centre dedicated to climate and Earth system research;
- Support for code optimisation and efficient resource utilisation;
- Co-development of ICON, especially concerning its infrastructure, SW design, and GPU porting;
- Broad portfolio of maintained tools and applications in the Earth system domain;
- Data management, analysis, visualisation, and publication.
SMHI - Earth System Modelling & Coordination
- Long history of ESM development and coordination of development;
- Practical experience in setting up and running climate data production;
- Experienced hub of coordinated climate experiments, such as CMIP and CORDEX;
- Development of containerisation techniques for ESMs.
